Molecular PCR COVID Testing

Our diagnostic laboratory specializes in Molecular PCR Covid Testing and performs all our testing in-house. Results are typically available in under 24 hours.

About our PCR Covid-19 Tests

Molecular COVID-19 tests are designed to detect an active infection with SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. We utilize a molecular testing method known as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), often called PCR.
PCR tests detect the virus’s genetic material in the sample, typically collected by swabbing the patient’s nose or throat. Our PCR testing method is generally considered the most accurate method of diagnosing COVID-19.

What does our PCR Covid test measure?

Molecular PCR tests are designed to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 by isolating and then copying very small amounts of the virus’s genetic material. This copied material can be analyzed for SARS-CoV-2 and even trace amounts can be detected due to the amplification process. This type of molecular testing is also known as nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT).

Our laboratory exclusively utilizes this method of testing for COVID-19, as well as other viruses like influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). We are also able to detect co-infections with more than one virus in the same sample – something that cannot be done with traditional testing methods such as a culture.

How long does it take for coronavirus to become detectable by PCR?

At the start of any viral infection, such as COVID-19, there is a period known as the “latent period” when a person is infected, but cannot pass the virus to anyone else. This is followed by the “incubation period” when they start to show symptoms. It differs from virus to virus: some viral infections display symptoms before a person can spread the virus, while with the COVID-19 virus, a person usually becomes contagious before symptoms appear, and some do not have any symptoms at all. This makes it hard to control the virus, as people can spread it without knowing due to the delay in symptom appearance. The average incubation period for COVID-19 is 5-6 days (though it can be up to 14 days), and there is evidence that people become contagious 2-3 days before they show symptoms.
Research suggests that PCR tests can detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA around 1-3 days before the onset of symptoms which is almost the same time as when they start to be infectious.
